Cleaning
Quick daily spot cleaning and a thorough monthly clean keep a crested gecko enclosure healthy. Waste and old food breed bacteria and mold fast in a warm, humid space.
- Daily: remove droppings and uneaten food, refresh water, wipe the glass, mist in the evening
- Weekly: wipe down surfaces, rinse the water and food dishes, replace paper towel substrate
- Monthly: full clean and substrate change, or as needed
Full clean:
- Move the gecko to a secure temporary container with air holes and a hide.
- Remove all substrate, decor and dishes.
- Scrub surfaces with a reptile-safe disinfectant used as directed on the label.
- Rinse everything thoroughly and let it dry completely.
- Rebuild the enclosure and return the gecko.
For bioactive setups, spot clean daily and replace the substrate only when it becomes soured, compacted or overrun with mold.
Avoid ammonia, bleach residue, pine or citrus cleaners, scented sprays and essential oils. Their fumes can harm reptiles even after the surface looks dry.
Use separate tools for reptile care, never wash them in the kitchen sink, and wash your hands after every cleaning session.
